Improving your career in time for the New Year

As the end of the year approaches and you start to think of the performance review that awaits you, improving your career should be an absolute priority.

It’s not only about impressing your employer and protecting your job but also ensuring your own personal growth and satisfaction. You should feel happy and motivated in your job rather than feeling as if you’re at a standstill. Here are some pieces of advice to help you improve your career in time for the new year.

Improve your attitude

First of all, you need to learn how to approach your work with charisma and motivation. Even if you’re in an industry you love, a job role can quickly become tedious if you stop putting effort into it.

If you do the bare minimum then you’re obviously going to start hating your job. You’re just repeating the same tasks every day. Step out of your comfort zone and try different projects at work; put yourself out there and show your employer that you want a challenge. Volunteer to take on new tasks and you’ll impress your boss.

Improve your skill set

A great way to improve your career is to improve your skillset. Yes, you might have the correct qualifications and experience for your job but does your employer not expect you to keep growing?

You should be aiming to better yourself so that you have something to show for your time at a company. You could even look into an online BBA degree to get additional qualifications and skills that will help you in the workplace. You wouldn’t even have to “go back to school,” you could study at home in your spare time.

The point is that you should always be striving to learn more and push yourself further in your career. Your employer doesn’t want to see you staying in the same place forever. They want to see that you’re passionate and motivated about your work.

If you demonstrate that you’re learning more about the business world and picking up new skills through additional courses or qualifications then your boss might even consider promoting you to an elevated role. Improving your career is something that requires initiative; your boss is never going to realize your potential if you don’t realize your potential.

Improve your communication

As a final piece of advice, you shouldn’t try to do everything on a solo basis. You might be desperate for that promotion but you might not necessarily get it by being a lone wolf in the office. Employers want to see teamwork and collaboration; they want to know that you care about the company succeeding and not simply your personal success.

You should get to know your boss better, first of all. If you want to be the best employee you could possibly be for the company then figure out what it is that your boss wants from an employee. And get to know the boss’ boss too.

The goal is to get an understanding of the “bigger picture” rather than your small window of work. Through communicating more effectively with others in the workplace, you can step out of your bubble and start to see where the company is going.

Don’t disconnect yourself from your colleagues or you’ll fall out of the game. Start to use the right language in presentations and meetings to make the right impressions on the right people.

Improving your career is all about your connections with other people rather than simply “getting your job done;” that’s why it’s so important to communicate.
