Seven things you need for a successful startup

If you’ve never started a business before, there is one thing that you absolutely have to know before diving in head first – It’s HARD.

It’s no secret that nine out of 10 businesses fail at some point, and this is a statistic that you need to beat if you want to be a successful business owner.

Like I said, it’s difficult, but it’s certainly not impossible. Unfortunately, there is no one thing that you need to ensure your success; There are several things, all of which are as important and necessary as the other. If you don’t know what these things are, then read the list below for some help.

1. A solution

In order to be successful in business, you need something to sell, whether it is a product or a service. If you don’t already have something in mind, then you’ve likely started brainstorming ideas of things that you could sell.

Rather than do this, it makes much more sense to think of some problems, either in your life or the lives of others, and then come up with a product or service that solves that problem.

For your product or service to sell, people have to need it, otherwise, it’s just going to be a fad at best. At worst, it won’t sell at all.

2. Knowledge and experience

You can’t just jump into business headfirst with no knowledge or experience and expect everything to be smooth sailing. It just won’t happen. If you want to be successful, you have to work for it, which means that you need to gain experience, knowledge, and credibility, before suddenly deciding to start your own business.

This will help you to avoid making rookie mistakes, and will also help investors, suppliers, partners, and other important people to have some faith in you.

3. Funding

Businesses, unfortunately, aren’t built on willpower and a great idea alone; You have to have some money to get you off the ground. Most startups provide this money themselves, using money that they’ve saved up over the years.

Luckily, this doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, as, according to, more than 40 per cent of all small businesses started with less than $5,000. However, if you did need a bit more, then you can look into business loans from banks and other lenders.

4. Business model

If you do need to borrow from a lender to fund your business, then one of the most important things that you’ll need to take with you is your business model or plan.

If you didn’t already know, your business model shows how your business is going to make money, so it’s absolutely necessary, even if you’re not borrowing any money to fund your business. It will tell you where you’re getting your money from, and where your money is going, much like a bank statement for your business, as well as speak about many other aspects of your business.

5. An office

When you run a business, it can get pretty hectic, so it’s always a good idea to have somewhere that is just for your business. This means that you need an office.

If you have the spare money, then you can rent office space from companies, estate agents, or websites, like, but if you don’t then you could always set up an office in your home. Of course, each choice has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to think them all through before making a decision.

6. Buying customers

A business isn’t going to get very far without money coming in, and most of this is going to come from sales.

For this reason, it’s important to have a growing number of customers, all of whom want to buy your products before they’ve even been launched. This means that you’ll be able to get cash flowing as soon as you want to, rather than having to wait to build up momentum in the coming months, which could result in your business going under.

7. Discipline and drive

Working for yourself isn’t the same as working for a boss. When you work for a boss, you are set tasks that you have to do, or you could get fired, whereas when you work for yourself, you can do whatever you want, including nothing at all. If you don’t have the discipline and drive to get work done without someone telling you to, then your business is never going to get off the ground, so you need to seriously think about whether or not you can do what needs to be done every single day.

Starting a business isn’t easy, but with the seven key ingredients above, you should find that it becomes a little less difficult.
