Whether you work from home, or in a larger office complex, your office itself is crucial. A neat and tidy office that is organized and sensible can increase creativity and productivity. It can boost your mood and help you to get more done. A well-organized office can mean that you spend less time trying to find things and that you are free to focus on your work without distraction.

A cluttered, messy, and disorganized office has the opposite effect. You can spend most of your time trying to find the tools that you need. You might become easily distracted, lose essential files or documents, and find that you struggle with creative block. People that work in a messy office are more likely to be stressed out and tired, and less likely to feel fulfilled at work.

If your office is currently out of order and a bit of a mess, it may take time to sort it out. But, committing some time to get your office organized now can save you time, help your work, and improve your mood in the long-run. Here are some tips to help you.

Use a Database

The internet makes things so much easier. Use a database comparison tool to find the right database for your business, and you’ll no longer need files and print outs everywhere. Save to the cloud, keep files online, and use a database to manage information, and suddenly, keeping your office tidy is easier than it has ever been before.

Invest in Shelving

Make it easy to keep your office tidy by giving yourself the tools that you need to do so. Make sure you’ve got plenty of shelving, drawers and desk tidies, and that everything kept in your office has a home.

Spend Time Decluttering

If you want to get organized, one of the first things that you need to do is commit time to declutter. Work either section to section, clearing one set of selves, before moving on to your desk, and drawers, or work top to bottom. Sort your clutter into piles to keep, to recycle, to shred, and to throw away. Go through absolutely everything, being ruthless and finding a sensible home for everything that you are keeping.

Change Your Layout

Think about the layout of your office. Are the things that you use on a day to day basis within easy reach? Are important documents safe? Are you comfortable while you are working?

Get into Good Habits

Once everything is tidy, the hardest part if often sticking to it. A sensible layout will help. But, get into the habit of putting everything away when you are finished with it, and leaving your office tidy at the end of the day.

Find a Filing System That Works

Your filing cabinets and bookshelves should have an order, so that it’s easy to find things, and file things away. But, that order isn’t the same for everyone. Alphabetically might work for some offices, but you may prefer chronologically or in order of importance. Find a system that works for you, and stick with it, even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else.
