Market highlights: Wall Street in the green, UK100 in the red

Yesterday, DJ30 gained 1.5%, mainly due to cloud-based software firm Salesforce outperforming the other elements on the exchange. The company’s shares rose by 7.2% after offering predictions for fiscal year 2023 that exceeded expectations. JPMorgan Chase and American Express rose by more than 3%. SP500 increased by 1.2%, with oil and gas firm Devon Energy accounting for most of that with an increase by almost 8%. Oil prices are at a two-month peak due to supply concerns.

NASDAQ100 increased by 1%, with biotech company Moderna and the Marriott International hotel franchise leading the pack. Today, US markets might be affected by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s announcement during an online event hosted by the Fed.

UK100 was the only losing European index

On September 23, the UK100 was the only main European index at a loss, lagging behind the rest. Today, it opened 2 points higher. The FRA40 and the GER40 were up by 1 point and 10 points respectively.  

The strong pound brought London’s blue-chip index down. Rolls Royce performed the best among UK large cap companies after Berenberg investment bank’s forecast of better-than-expected growth potential in its share price.

The pound rallied after the Bank of England’s comment along the lines of there being a stronger case for increasing interest rates.

Oil and natural gas prices continue to climb

Natural gas prices continued to rise. At the moment, they are twice as high as back in April. Oil is increasing as well, having registered three days of gains in a row. At the moment, oil prices are nearing a two-month high, reaching a peak since late July.

Evergrande in freefall in Hong Kong  

The stock of the most indebted property developer in the world listed in Hong Kong dropped by almost 10% yesterday. Still, all is not lost: Evergrande struck a deal two days ago with bondholders, somewhat mitigating concerns over a possible default.

Novavax files for emergency Covid listing with WHO

Novavax has filed for emergency use listing of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate with the World Health Organization (WHO). The biotech company reported a clinical trial success rate of nearly 90%. Its stock increased by almost 11% yesterday as a result.
