Vitalik Buterin stated that obfuscation, a strong cryptographic technique, could allow blockchains to serve as a reliable third party without requiring trust. Obfuscation changes a regular program into an “encrypted program,” which hides its actions but still provides the same results. He explained that indistinguishability obfuscation, or iO, is the strongest type because outsiders cannot differentiate between two programs if they act the same way.

Because of this property, iO could let developers encode complex rules into a single black box that everyone can verify, but no one can tamper with. Vitalik writes that “in theory, obfuscation lets us build a ‘trustless trusted third party’” that can replace a central operator. When paired with a blockchain, this kind of obfuscated logic could secure systems such as voting, auctions, or governance without requiring a human committee.

Why Blockchains Still Need More Than Obfuscation

However, Vitalik also warns that obfuscated programs cannot safely control money or other stateful assets on their own. Because anyone can copy the code, he notes that “an obfuscated program that directly holds funds would be trivially cloneable,” which breaks basic security.

Therefore, blockchains still need to track balances and other shared state, while obfuscation mainly hides how specific rules are enforced.

He argues that combining iO with a public ledger can still create powerful applications that stay secure, private, and resistant to collusion. For example, he highlights near‑trustless voting systems and auction protocols that do not rely on trusted servers. In these designs, the blockchain anchors the data, while the obfuscated program enforces complex logic that participants cannot game.

“Galactic” Runtimes Keep iO Far From Practical Use

Vitalik Buterin stresses that indistinguishability obfuscation has only recently become possible under “reasonable” security assumptions. However, he says current designs are wildly inefficient, with runtimes that are “galactic” and “could exceed the lifetime of the universe.” Because existing schemes stack heavy tools like fully homomorphic and functional encryption, they remain far too slow for real-world apps.

Looking ahead, he outlines three research paths that could make iO usable. One path aims to optimize today’s lattice-based constructions, another uses more “aggressive” lattice assumptions to simplify designs, and a third explores non‑lattice ideas such as local mixing obfuscation.

Vitalik concludes that if any of these efforts succeed, “almost any protocol that assumes a trusted third party” could instead run directly on cryptography and blockchains.
