  • 5G fixed wireless access is one of the most potential-packed applications of the new cellular technology
  • Most Nokia consumers want fixed wireless access in their homes.
  • Nokia has been one of the most active companies when it comes to 5G development.

Fixed Wireless Access, often referred to as FWA, is a term used in the telecommunications industry for a type of broadband access technology. In general, FWA describes any scenario where wireless local area network (WLAN) technologies are used to provide last-mile connectivity between an operator’s network and a customer’s premises.

Nokia is a global leader in the development and deployment of FWA solutions, their technology being used by some of the largest service providers in the world. According to BanklessTimes.com, over three-quarters of Nokia customers wish for fixed wireless access in their homes.

Speaking on the report, BanklessTimes CEO Jonathan Merry said.

Technology has always been a huge part of our lives but the pandemic has forced even more people to work remotely and learn virtually. The demand for fast, reliable home internet has never been higher and we believe that 5G fixed wireless access is the answer. Not only is 5G FWA significantly faster than traditional wired broadband technologies like DSL and cable, but it’s also more affordable and easier to deploy. This makes it the perfect solution for service providers looking to meet the needs of their customers.

Next-Generation Wireless Broadband Technologies

Nokia has been working on 5G FWA for many years, and its products are already in use by major service providers. The company has also been an active member of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) since its inception. The WBA is a global industry association committed to promoting, developing, and adopting next-generation wireless broadband technologies, including 5G.

By leveraging Access in the lower frequencies of the wireless spectrum, 5G Fixed Wireless provides an option for wired internet. A degree of service bandwidth capacity comparable to transmission lines in the millimeter wavelength region can be delivered by 5G FWA.

Additionally, FWA allows for increased user density without interruption. Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) with external transmitters can dramatically lessen signal degradation. This happens even when standard building materials have low mmWave penetration.

FWA, built on a genuine 5G core, offers more than just a route to improved mobile broadband. It paves the way for new service offerings that demand large bandwidths while requiring low latency. These new services were not possible with 4G LTE and are not well served by 5G mobile broadband solutions.

Emerging Services

The post-pandemic world will see a growing demand for such next-generation services. They include high-definition video conferencing, virtual reality, and augmented reality gaming. 5G FWA is the best option to support the delivery of these new services.

Therefore, it is no surprise that Nokia is focused on 5G FWA and that it is in high demand. The company is well-positioned to meet the market's needs and help service providers deliver next-generation services to their customers.
