The National Crime Agency, which is the UK's national agency for combating organized crime, is hiring a professional digital assets and cryptocurrency team according to a civil service job posting, CoinDesk reported. The post reads:
The NCCU Crypto Cell will be dedicated to a proactive cryptocurrency remit with the right tools and capabilities to target UK based subjects along with supporting colleagues with specialist advice and guidance.This role will be part of a new project that will form a specialized cryptocurrency and virtual assets team. The team will sit within NCCU Op Support. The role will support existing and new investigations where specialist cryptocurrency experience is required along with taking a proactive lead in identifying targets for further development.
“Strong” experience in blockchain investigations
The job post also required “strong experience” in running forensic blockchain investigations on organized crime. The investigative role is part of a project to form a digital asset and crypto team. The unit of the national watchdog will start with five employees and build from there.
Crypto fraud up almost 33% in a year
At the end of last year, CoinDesk reported that cryptocurrency fraud in the UK had increased by 32% to 226 million pounds, around $273 million, in one year, citing data from Action Fraud, a UK police unit.
Also in 2022, police departments stationed crypto experts nationwide in an effort to curb crypto-related crime. Legislators voted to expand local agencies’ authority to seize crypto linked to terrorist and other illegal activity.
