According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons (BOP), Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) could serve less than 21 years of his 25-year prison sentence due to federal policies on good behavior and time reduction programs. The projected release date for the one-time crypto mogul is now listed as December 14, 2044.
Bankman-Fried was convicted in 2023 of fraud, and it was one of the biggest recorded in the crypto sector after he stole billions of dollars of customer funds and channeled them into his hedge fund, Alameda Research.
In March 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years for his actions. Prosecutors described Bankman-Fried’s scheme as one of the largest financial frauds in recent history, causing more than $11 billion in losses. The charges included seven counts of fraud and conspiracy.
Sam Bankman-Fried & Incarceration With Diddy
Originally held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, SBF shared a dormitory-style unit where his fellow inmates included Sean “Diddy” Combs. During his time there, he surprised the public with a controversial interview conducted by Tucker Carlson.
That interview led to the resignation of his crisis manager. He has since been transferred to FCI Terminal Island, a low-security federal prison in San Pedro, California, with about 850 male inmates.
The BOP said that under current regulations, federal inmates are eligible to earn up to 54 days from their sentence per year through “Good Conduct Time.” To earn this, they must follow rules and avoid disciplinary issues. Inmates engaging in rehabilitative and educational programs can receive additional sentence reductions. Time already served before sentencing is also a factor in release calculations.
The BOP did not comment on the specifics of any inmate’s sentence. However, the spokesperson explained that the policies apply across the federal prison system. Bankman-Fried had his bail revoked two months before the trial. He leaked private writings from his former girlfriend and Alameda CEO, Caroline Ellison. According to authorities, those two months in pretrial detention also count towards his sentence.
Caroline Ellison Gets 6 Months Reduction
Ellison herself received a two-year sentence for her role in the fraud. She also benefited from the BOP’s sentence reduction policies. Details show she is now expected to be released in May 2026. This early release is six months shorter than her original sentence.
Despite his current public profile, Bankman-Fried remains one of the most notable figures in the crypto industry. His case shows the crypto markets’ chaotic and often unregulated nature in the early 2020s. His ongoing appeal and the silence of his legal team add a complex layer to the potential early release.
