Botanix Labs has officially launched its Bitcoin Layer 2 mainnet in partnership with Chainlink, bringing Ethereum-style programmability, lightning-fast transactions, and robust DeFi infrastructure to the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

The collaboration between Botanix and Chainlink is a strategic leap for both security and interoperability in the blockchain space. Chainlink’s decentralized oracle network will provide Botanix with reliable data feeds and secure off-chain computations, ensuring that DeFi applications on the new mainnet operate smoothly and securely.

Botanix Mainnet Built With Chainlink’s Oracle

For years, Bitcoin has been celebrated as digital gold—a secure, decentralized store of value. But its limited programmability and slow transaction speeds have left it trailing behind blockchains like Ethereum in the race to power decentralized finance (DeFi) and smart contracts.

The layer 2 mainnet, built with Chainlink’s oracle and interoperability technology, aims to change that narrative, introducing:

  • Block times slashed from 10 minutes to 5 seconds
  • Transaction fees as low as $0.02
  • Full Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility
  • Over 40 live applications at launch, including trading, lending, staking, and more.

The  partnership is based on these key elements:

  • Chainlink Data Feeds: Powering real-time, tamper-proof data for DeFi protocols on Botanix.
  • Chainlink CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol): Enabling seamless token and data transfers between Botanix and other blockchains, including Ethereum.
  • Chainlink Scale Program: Botanix is the first Bitcoin Layer 2 to join, granting developers enhanced access to Chainlink’s services and accelerating ecosystem growth

Spiderchain Upgrades Security

At the heart of Botanix’s Layer 2 is the innovative “Spiderchain” architecture, a web of multisig wallets and BTC-staked Orchestrator nodes selected via randomness from Bitcoin block hashes. This design ensures:

  • No single entity, including Botanix Labs, can control the network
  • Decentralized governance from day one, with 16 independent node operators (including Galaxy, Fireblocks, and Antpool)
  • Plans to expand to 100+ operators by 2026 for even greater decentralization

Unlike other Layer 2 solutions that rely on centralized bridges or custodians, Spiderchain keeps user funds natively on Bitcoin, reducing the risk of hacks and aligning with Bitcoin’s core principles of self-custody and open participation.
