  • The NFT went for 1,080.69 ETH, the highest amount of ETH ever paid for a Bored Ape.
  • While the NFT set an ETH record, it is not the most expensive Bored Ape in dollar terms.
  • Before this, malicious actors targeted BAYC holders on OpenSea by exploiting a front-end glitch.

As the non-fungible token (NFT) market continues catching on, one project, in particular, is performing exceptionally well as the secondary sale of its NFTs continues setting new records. Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), an NFT collection featuring 10,000 unique apes, saw one of its pieces sell for 1,080.69 ETH (approximately $2.85 million) on the night of January 30.

Reportedly, this sale took place on an NFT marketplace dubbed LooksRare. The NFT in question is Bored Ape #232, which features an army green background, a seaman’s hat, sleepy eyes, a smoking jacket, a clean bored mouth, and solid gold fur. Notably, only 0.46% of the NFTs in the entire collection have solid gold fur. This makes Bored Ape #232 one of the rarest BAYC pieces.

Although Bored Ape #232 has not fetched the highest amount in dollar terms, the NFT has set a record for getting the highest four-digit ETH sale. The increase in the amount of ETH paid is due to the recent crash, which saw ETH plunge from its all-time high (ATH) of 4,891.70 to trade at $2,742.67 at the time of writing.

As a result of this plunge, the floor price of the BAYC collection in ETH has also increased to 118.69 ETH, according to data from NFT marketplace OpenSea.

BAYC’s flame continue burning bright

This news comes as the BAYC project continues becoming popular, with multiple celebrities purchasing NFTs in the collection. The latest celebrity to join the club is Serena Williams, who posted her pink Bored Ape on her Twitter handle.

However, it seems Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian gifted Williams the NFT, seeing as he responded to the tweet saying,

First I get you the SerenaPunk, now I get the pink ape you wanted... you realize I'm only gifting you NFTs from now on right?

Before Williams, multiple celebrities, including Justin Beiber, Eminem, Neymar Jr, Stephen Curry, Post Malone, and Lil Baby, among others, secured an NFT in the collection.

As a result of the increasing hype around the project, BAYC recently suffered an attack that saw malicious actors steal $750,000 after leveraging an exploit on OpenSea’s front end. PeckShieldAlert, the real-time alerts bot of the security firm PeckShield, unveiled this news on January 24.

The front-end glitch also saw a user lose his NFT after it sold for a price 92% lower than the floor price. Going by @ToastVirtual on Twitter, the user said his NFT (Bored Ape #8924) sold for 6.66 ETH, which was an old listing.
