  • GPT-4 is ten times more advanced than ChatGPT, passes law exams with flying colors
  • AI is taking jobs away from humans
  • Machines might flood communication channels with fake news

An open letter signed by Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and thousands of AI CEOs, tech leaders, and researchers urges a temporary pause on development of artificial intelligence. The signatories call AI a “profound risk to society and humanity.”

Immediate pause on training AI

The letter was published by the Future of Life Institute (FOLI), a US think tank. The signatories call for an immediate pause on training AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for at least half a year. The letter states:

Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources. Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening.

GPT-4 passed law exams with top scores

GPT-4, the latest version of OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, has passed some of the hardest law exams with top scores. It is said to be ten times more advanced than its forerunner. Some other AI stats for 2023 will shock you.

FOLI claims the race between AI companies has gone out of control. Not even the creators of the products can control or predict what will happen next according to the institute. This reflects on the market: the global AI software market is projected to reach $126 billion in the next two years.

“Automating” employment opportunities

The biggest concerns involve that AI is taking jobs away from humans and there is a risk of machines flooding communication channels with fake news, lies, and propaganda. FOLI is even concerned that machines might eventually outsmart and outnumber people, making them obsolete.

AI-powered technology has also been used to create video and audio hoaxes. AI-generated artwork runs the risk of violating copyright laws.

Government has got it “upside-down”

Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz is one of those in favor of regulating AI. He recently expressed shock at how much attention regulators were giving crypto and how little AI was getting. He told investors, quoted by CoinTelegraph:

When I think about AI, it shocks me that we’re talking so much about crypto regulation and nothing about AI regulation. I mean, I think the government’s got it completely upside-down.
