A new partnership between the British Museum and The Sandbox is aimed at making artifacts in the former’s collection more accessible by taking them to the metaverse, Cointelegraph wrote, citing an announcement by The Sandbox on July 27.
The announcement revealed that the partnership intended to create new and unconventional ways for people to discover world history. The initiative will generate a variety of digital collectibles that showcase different collections of the museum.
British Museum expands reach
Sebastien Borget, cofounder and COO of The Sandbox, considers the initiative an opportunity to reach new audiences. According to him, it is a great way for The Sandbox players to learn more about fascinating aspects of human culture, art, and history in the British Museum, no matter where they are.
The partnership includes IaCollection, a Web3 platform and the museum’s licensing partner, which has cooperated with some of the most famous museums worldwide to make art part of the digital realm.
Centre Pompidou and Kharkiv Art Museum introduced NFT collections
This is not the first time a leading museum has tapped the blockchain for ideas. Earlier this year, France’s Centre Pompidou, a major museum of modern art, presented a new exhibition in the budding intersection of blockchain and art. It featured some of the most popular nonfungible token (NFTs) collections across the globe, including CryptoPunks.
Before that, the Kharkiv Art Museum presented an NFT collection to raise funds for Ukraine’s war effort and preserve the country’s cultural heritage.
Antwerp Royal Museum was first to unite history and metaverse in Europe
Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Belgium was the first museum in Europe to digitize a classic art masterpiece, which is worth millions.
In 2022, metaverse platform Decentraland organized an event called Metaverse Art Week, which featured different interactive digital art exhibits. Those included an experience around the work and life of Frida Kahlo with previously unseen, digitalized art.
