  • The funds for cancer patients were raised at a charity exhibition and auction near Paris
  • NFTs have helped protect war victims and support mental health initiatives

Trevor Jones, a Scottish nonfungible token (NFT) artist, raised almost $140,000 from an art event in Edinburgh to support cancer patients, Cointelegraph wrote. The funds will help thousands of people suffering from cancer and their relatives, who need urgent support.

A highly successful charity exhibit and auction

The popular crypto artist raised the funds at a charity exhibition and auction at a Web3 party taking place annually in Château de Vallery near Paris. He donated them to Maggie’s Edinburgh, an establishment providing free cancer treatment.

Maggie’s Edinburgh reports that the money Jones collected is the highest single charity donation from an art event in the institution’s history, which spans almost three decades.

A representative of Maggie’s attributed the outcome to the NFT art community’s support and enthusiasm.

NFTs and philanthropy

NFTs have helped communities raise funds for philanthropic initiatives ever since they got mainstream attention during the market’s peak two years ago. They have helped protect war victims and supported mental health initiatives and causes of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

In 2022, the Ukrainian government sold a CryptoPunk NFT to aid the nation in its war efforts against Russia. CryptoPunk #5364 was sold for 90 ETH, worth over $100,000 at the time.

US FEC approved NFTs as a fundraising means

Also last year, the US Federal Election Commission approved using NFTs as a means to raise funds for charity. The Singapore Red Cross and leading corporations like Coca-Cola have opted for crypto and NFT donations to support different philanthropic initiatives.

In loving memory

More than two dozen artists took part in the exhibition near Paris. Jones commented that the funds raised would go to support services for those affected by a cancer diagnosis — patients and their families – and would definitely make a difference.

He added that the initiative was also a nice way to remember a beloved crypto artist who died of cancer, but did not name them.
