  • World Romance Scam Prevention Day is commemorated on October 3

Tinder, its parent company Match Group, and Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett announced a joint initiative to fight common online financial scams and toxic behaviors, Bankless Times learned from a press release.

Today is World Romance Scam Prevention Day

Today is a special day. World Romance Scam Prevention Day is commemorated on October 3 to raise awareness of online financial scams, which affect millions of people all over the world.

Jonathan Bennett commented:

Fans have a lot of fun celebrating all their favorite memes and quotes every October 3, but it's also important that we can take this day to acknowledge some important lessons about how we interact with others online. We want everyone to continue to recognize this day, while also being more aware of the types of common behaviors of online scammers to watch out for.

Pig butchering is the most harmful scam in the US

The FBI reports that crypto scams like "Pig Butchering" do more damage than laymen may believe. It is the biggest financial scam in the US, incurring damages of over $3 billion a year. What’s more, the number of young victims of these financial scams is increasing each year.

Stephanie Danzi, SVP of Global Marketing at Tinder, said:

On World Romance Scam Prevention Day, Tinder is educating users of all ages on ways to protect themselves so they do not fall victim to online scams.

Hinge is joining Tinder's efforts in their own campaign - sending in-app messages to warn users to never take financial advice or send money to someone they haven’t met in real life.

Kathy Waters, Executive Director of the organization Advocating Against Romance Scammers, commented:

World Romance Scam Prevention Day aims to squash stigmas that prevent approximately 97% of victims from reporting and obtaining justice. Advocating Against Romance Scammers created this day to help bring together every global entity affected by the scams to increase awareness and help others understand the severity of the controlled manipulation in order for the fraud to succeed.
