Solana is preparing to take a remarkable leap in scalability by raising its per-block compute limit. This is a 66% increase from 60 million to 100 million Compute Units (CUs) under the new SIMD-0286 proposal.
SIMD-0286 is a recently proposed protocol upgrade designed to expand the computational bandwidth of each Solana block. Compute Units (CUs) measure the computational work for executing transactions and smart contracts.
By increasing the CU limit from 60M to 100M, each block will be able to handle significantly more complex operations, higher volumes of transactions, and denser decentralized application (dApp) activity.
As the Solana network grew, with a fixed CU limit, users faced failed transactions and long delays during demand spikes. Previous upgrades (including the shift from 48M to 60M CUs) offered only short-term relief as on-chain volumes reached new heights.
Advocates for SIMD-0286 argue the network needs a transformative jump to 100M CUs, not just to relieve congestion, but to future-proof Solana for unprecedented throughput.
Benefits Of Solana Increasing to 100 Million CUs Per Block
For users, the benefits include faster and smoother transactions, lower fees, and improved event handling. The larger block cap will enable more transactions to clear every 400 milliseconds, lowering the chance for users to see “compute unit budget exceeded” errors.
As bottlenecks ease, competition for blockspace —and thus transaction fees —should decrease. Furthermore, highly anticipated events (such as major mint launches) will run more reliably, supporting Solana’s reputation for hosting viral, high-traffic launches.
Solana developers will gain greater app complexity and scalability, enabling innovation. DApps, especially in DeFi, gaming, and NFT spaces, can become more sophisticated without overwhelming the network. Additionally, the upgrade removes limits that previously forced developers to compromise on features or throughput.
Solana has a clear strategy: to embrace ambitious technical upgrades to maintain a competitive edge in the market. If successful, SIMD-0286 will allow Solana to better compete with Ethereum and other “next-gen” blockchains in terms of real-world dApp scaling and user experience.
