Having an employee on sick leave can be an annoying situation for everyone, but if that extended leave is caused by an injury sustained at work, the issues caused can be so much worse.

Being there for your employees can be so easy, and there are so many things that you can do to prevent these things from happening in the first place saving your company money and stress over simple things like finding cover and paying for sick leave, to potential lawsuits. But accidents do happen, and some injury will be sustained at some point throughout your career, so be prepared for it.

Preventing

Employee safety should always be the number one priority for any company; your employees are the lifeblood of your company, and you should be doing all that you can to retain them and to maintain their happiness and loyalty within your company.

Health and safety rules will differ depending on your business location and industry, but making sure that the basics are covered is essential. Your basics will cover prevention of obvious injuries with things like wet floor signs and bannisters on walkways. And where a lot of companies out there leave it at the basics, you should be prepared to go the extra mile for your staff.

Look at your workplace – where are there areas where you can improve the safety of your staff? If you’re renting, you will need to have the landlord’s approval before making any changes. But can you include better security to the entrance for your staff, including cameras and secure locking? If you have workers that leave late at night or leave stock inside overnight, you might want to consider employing security guards.

When it comes to equipment, it goes without saying that you should have it all tested regularly by a specialist company.

Dealing

If an injury does occur within your workplace, then you need to know how to deal with the situation. If you haven’t taken the proper precautions with signs, then you may have to deal with personal injury lawyers, and rightly so.

If you haven’t taken the time and effort to firstly ensure your employee’s safety, and secondly to cover your own back, then you’re asking for it. If however, you have taken those precautions, then you will need to get yourself a business lawyer to fight your corner.

Supporting your employee through their time away, and their return to work is key. Along with making them feel safe while at work, being there for them outside of work is what will make them loyal to your company. Accidents will happen, whether it’s your fault or not, so when they do be gracious with time off.

By being flexible with their time off, as well as with any future appointments will be a massive help to them. If their injury puts them in a wheelchair for a while, or indefinitely, make the appropriate changes within your workplace to accommodate that.
