Launching a food business can be a lucrative direction for your business this year. A food business can be anything from a farm to a food truck, to a 5-star restaurant, and it can be an incredibly successful venture for all involved.

If you are looking to start your own food business this year, it is important for you to know how to make the most of every gap in the industry for your own gain.

 1. Know Your Concept

The first thing you need to do when you decide to open up a food business is to brainstorm and come up with a winning concept which will be a success from the outset. This could be a vegan business with sustainable produce; a fast-food chain or greasy spoon such as in & out; or something which you notice a need for in your local area. Let’s look at a pasta fast food business as an example. If you explore your local area, you will likely notice that there are many fast food outlets which serve pizza, kebabs and curry; but none which serve pasta. People love pasta, and this is a gap in the market which you could take advantage of. It is important as an entrepreneur for you to look at ways to provide something unique and valuable to your customers, and finding that key concept is the hardest thing.

2. Keep Adequate Funds

No matter what kind of business you plan to initiate this year, one thing you have to do is keep a reserve of funds in your account. Having an account full of money is important for you as a fledgling business as you will often come across unexpected costs and fees. Unexpected things can happen during your startup, so it is best to have a backup plan if things don’t go your way right away.

3. Get A Memorable Logo

When creating any business, it is crucial for you to create a logo which is fun, bright, and easy to remember. Looking at the most popular food businesses in the world: everyone knows that yellow ‘M’, and everyone knows what Colonel Sanders looks like. If you want to make it big in the food business your logo needs to stand out so that people will spot your establishment while out and about and immediately know who you are and what experience they will get.

4. Create A Menu Card

When people either visit your restaurant or you drop flyers in the post, you will want to design a unique menu card which people are able to recognize as soon as they see it. For a great example, we can look at Domino’s pizza. Their menu is always set out the same and folded in a unique way, with that signature blue colour shining out from the pile of leaflets you receive in the post. It is important for you to create something which has the same effect as this.

5. Build A Website

No matter what industry you are involved in, you should always have a website to draw on for marketing. If someone walks past your establishment and wants to know more, the first thing they will do is google your name and find you to look at your menu. It is a common practice and if you don’t have a website, you are missing out on key traffic and opportunities. It is also something you will want to have for those times when someone googles ‘Italian Restaurants near me’, so that you can pop up along with the other search results they find.

6. Use Social Media

The food business is one which is often very centred around people, and as a result of this, your marketing strategy should also be very centred around people. When devising a marketing plan for your food business social media should be at the top of your list and it is something which you can utilise in several ways. First of all, create a page and make sure that you promote your business and share lots of images of your food and your establishment. As well as this, Facebook groups can be a great tool for you to use. Pretty much every postcode and local community will have their own Facebook group where they share news and events and moan about bad parking. Joining one of these groups as yourself will allow you to integrate with the community and share posts from your business page to make people aware of who you are.
