In fact, Microsoft’s revenue had grown across every segment. Their productivity and business processes segment was powered by Office 365 Commercial, as well as by Linkedin. Windows held 76% of the global market share for operating systems used by desktop PCs in mid-2022.

On the other hand, the macOS held 14.6%, Linux was at 2.42%, and Chrome OS was at 1.71%.

It comes as no surprise that the OS market share of the Microsoft company is still at the top, for desktops at least. In the last decade, its market share never fell below 70%.

Similarly, since 2013 Linux moved around between 1% and 2%, while macOS almost doubled its share from 7.95% in 2013 to 14.6% in mid-2022.

Chrome is the leading browser in the US, with a 50.9% market share in December 2022.

And in fact, the browser was in the lead for at least the past 8 years, since 2015. The second most popular browser is Safari, with 33.97%, with Edge in third place at 6.73%.

A similar situation can be found in Europe. In 2022, Chrome had a 58% market share, Safari had 21.66%, and Edge had 5.28%.

Microsoft’s market cap was $1.79 trillion by the end of 2022.

Microsoft industry analysis from 2022 shows a substantial drop in market cap when we look at $2.5 trillion it had in November of 2021. However, the most likely cause is the difficult global economic situation.

Namely, its market cap in 2020 was $1.681 trillion, it was at $1,200 trillion in 2019 and $780.36 billion in 2018. There has been consistent and continual growth throughout the decade, where 2021 was more of an outlier than a sign of bad things to come.

Over 1.5 million companies worldwide used Microsoft Office 365 in early 2023.

While it's difficult to determine how many individual users are out there, the data shows that in early 2023, in the US, 1,354,969 companies used Microsoft Office 365.

In second place is the United Kingdom, with 330,084, then Australia, with 157,000.

Microsoft loses between $100 and $200 on every Xbox Series X and S sold.

At first glance, this does not seem to make any sense. However, Microsoft actually recoups this loss and makes a profit based on additional sales generated by consumers owning an Xbox.

Namely, sales from controllers, games, and headsets more than make up for the loss. Furthermore, subscriptions for Xbox live and Game Pass provide a substantial source of revenue as well.

However, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox at Microsoft, did point out that they might increase console prices in the near future, following in the tracks of Sony’s PlayStation 5 price increases.

By June 2022, 50.53 million Xbox One units have been sold worldwide.

Most of these sales were made in North America, accounting for 31.58 million. In Europe, around 12.82 million were sold, with the rest of the world generating, in total, 6.02 million sales.

We also need to mention that there were only 120 thousand units sold in Japan in total. This, along with so few sales in Asia they weren't even segmented, speaks to the popularity of Sony’s PlayStation in the region.

Chromebooks outsold Macs for the first time in 2020.

Furthermore, Microsoft trends show that while Windows has dropped through 2020 in terms of global OS market share, ChromeOS has increased.

At the beginning of the year, macOS was at 5.8%, while Chrome OS was at 5.3, with Windows dominating at 87.5%. However, by Q4, the macOS share grew to 7.7%, and ChromeOS had shown substantial growth, reaching 14.4%. Windows, however, had dropped to 76.7%.
