Psychedelic, a decentralized studio creating Web3 products, has launched the NFT-based MetaSports Basketball, a fantasy sports game that allows users to port existing NFT collectibles to create in-game characters, CoinRivet reported. Now owners of BAYC, Mutant Apes, Cool Cats, Clonex, and other popular NFT collections can use NFTs to create new, original collectibles and use them in-game.

According to Psychedelic CEO and founder Harrison Hines, MetaSports Basketball represents the first open character gaming model in the world:

We envision this becoming a standard in NFT gaming, signaling a move beyond the archetypal fixed character norms, and replacing them with open games where characters can be derived from almost any NFT.

A unique sports management model

Each NFT will receive special attributes based on the traits and rarity of its counterpart. The new game follows a unique sports management model, where you create your team to compete against others via simulated games and seasons. Teams and franchises are created by minting, collecting, and trading signature NFT players.

Procedurally and randomly generated

The in-game NFTs are randomly, procedurally generated 3D basketball players with a unique lifecycle and evolving statistics, much like the career of a real-life basketball player. In the game, you can see players develop from amateurs to pros, shown in their rarity and stats. You can even see them retire. This guarantees constant team rotation and a space that promotes strategic teambuilding.

Game uses Ethereum as base asset layer

MetaSports Basketball will use Ethereum as its base asset layer for NFTs, Internet Computer for logic, gameplay, and affordable transactions, StarkNet as an orchestration and game reward layer, and IPFS as a storage redundancy layer.

Cutting-edge cross-network bridge for L2 functionality

MetaSports Basketball will leverage its cross-network bridge Terabethia to guarantee layer 2 functionality and port Ethereum Request for Comment (ERC) standard assets like ERC1155, ERC20, and ERC721 tokens to the Internet Computer. Internet Computer, a decentralised backbone for Web3 developed by the Dfinity Foundation, is a blockchain acting as its own cloud. IC does not rely on centralised servers. This enables a fast network that’s also easier to develop.

Players can create a team of any species, style, and origin worthy of the metaverse. They can build their team with external NFTs from approved collections or use in-game players. With the former option, the NFTs morph into MetaSports players to achieve outstanding results.
